The FrontFace digital signage and kiosk software is best known as on-premises software for the Windows operating system. Although it also offers an Android version, the primary focus remains on Windows.
With the upcoming version 5 of FrontFace—scheduled for release at the end of the year and available as a public beta starting in late summer/fall 2026—the software’s entire system architecture has been modernized and now also provides support for the free operating system Linux (Ubuntu in particular). This is fulfilling a long-standing and frequently expressed customer request, because the new version means FrontFace can now also run on the popular Raspberry Pi single-board computers. All in all, this delivers even greater freedom and flexibility when it comes to hardware selection.
In terms of feature scope, FrontFace 5 will gradually catch up to that of the current version 4 and will also unlock many new functions and possibilities beyond that. For example, alongside the local on-premises installation, FrontFace 5 also offers the option of a distributed client/server installation using a central server. The cloud support familiar from FrontFace 4 is available in FrontFace 5 as well, so customers can freely choose whether they prefer a completely independent on-premises installation or convenient cloud connectivity with zero configuration.
The support for Linux as an operating system gives a decisive advantage in times of skyrocketing memory prices and scarce PC hardware. This problem has also been intensivied by the discontinuation of Windows 10 and the heavily lifted hardware requirements of the successor Windows 11. With the Linux version of the FrontFace Player, older PC hardware that would otherwise end up in the trash can still be used for digital signage projects – That’s true sustainability!
Existing FrontFace customers will be able to upgrade their licenses to FrontFace 5 free of charge if they have a valid Updates & Support plan. And existing FrontFace 4 projects can be imported into the new FrontFace 5—something that is sure to please many customers as well!
